Uspensky Vaulovsky women’s hermitage, Tutaevsky district of Yaroslavl region

In a very beautiful place, on the banks of a small river is the ancient village of Vaulovo. The estate here belonged to a God-loving man — Count Mordvinov. In 1903 Vladimir Pavlovich Mordvinov transferred it to the possession of the Ioannovsky Monastery in St. Petersburg. Soon John of Krondstat arrived in Vaulovo. He really liked the place. He said that this is a true paradise on earth.

He and several nuns from St. Petersburg took up the arrangement of the hermitage. Under their leadership were built: a hospital, a strange house, an almshouse. The nuns equipped ponds where they bred fish.

Father John came to the hermitage to retire and regain his strength. A small house was built for him and a gazebo behind him. Before his death, John of Krondstat gave the nuns 40 linden seedlings, according to the number of Liturgies that he served that summer. The nuns understood that it was not the season for the seedlings, so they asked the father for a special blessing. All the trees have taken root and still please parishioners with their appearance.

In 1919, the skit was closed. Some of the nuns returned to the Ioannovsky monastery, some remained in the Yaroslavl region. Churches were destroyed, icons were destroyed. To this day, only one has survived – the “gracious sky”. She is now in the Assumption Temple of the Skete.

Restoration of the monastery began in 1997. And in 2003 already celebrated the centenary of its founding. Currently, the Assumption Church and the bell tower have been fully restored. Getting to the skit is not easy, it is located away from large cities and federal highways. But if you overcome the difficult road, you can understand why John Krondstatsky loved this place so much. It breathes a special peace, fills the soul with bright joy.
