Temple of Nikola Wet in Yaroslavl

The church dedicated to Nicholas the Wonderworker has long been the main Posad temple of Yaroslavl. Located far from the bustling central streets, it is not as famous as the other temples of Yaroslavl. The history of the church is full of interesting events, and the painting of its walls is recognized as the best among the temples of this period.

The name of the church is unusual. Church tradition says that in ancient times there was a misfortune in a young family. Their tiny daughter fell out of the boat. It was not possible to find it in the river, but a crying baby was found at the icon of Nicholas the Wonderworker. They’ve been written ever since.
There are several icons on which St. Nicholas holds the baby. Such icons were called “Wet”. One of these icons gave the name to the temple in Yaroslavl.

Another story has already been officially recorded. In 1801, a boat overturned on the river, in which there were 3 adults and five children, as they would now say, of preschool age. When rescuers approached the scene of the accident, they saw that the children kept on the water, although none of them could swim. Only one girl was flooded with water, but she was pumped out in a boat. This incident happened exactly opposite the temple of Nikola Wet. The locals were proud of the temple, and after that they loved it even more.

How not to be proud of such a temple? From the inside and outside he was amazed by his design. But the temple is old, has seen much in its lifetime.

It was built with merchant money in the 17th century. Before that there was a small wooden church on this place. It burned down, and the merchant and Posad people decided to build a stone temple in its place. Construction took 7 years. The church was consecrated in 1672. Outside the building.
They finished with colorful tiles, and from the inside the walls were painted with religious subjects. Yes, so well painted that the frescoes survived the revolution, the civil war, many years of dampness and desolation.

Central to wall painting is the painting of the Last Judgment. If you touch the fire depicted on it, it will be cold in winter, even in summer. And on the wall will remain a mark from the hand, like in winter on the window. It will disappear, but it will leave an impression.

The parishioners of the temple did not spare money for its decoration. The temple had luxuriously decorated wooden places for high guests. After the church closed, they were transferred to an anti-religious museum. Therefore, they survived and are now in the church of Elijah the Prophet. church-paper
decorated with a forged decorative grille. Huge panics lit the building.

Despite some attempts at restoration, comprehensive measures to restore the church were not taken. The temple is in desolation, although there are services on holidays.
