Bethany is a small village near Jerusalem. There lived a friend of Christ, Lazarus and his sisters. Martha and Maria. Bethany became famous after Jesus resurrected his friend Lazarus, who died as early as 3 days.
In the Moscow region, Bethany was christened a place about which Archbishop Plato began to settle and equip at the end of the 18th century. He opened a skete in the town of Corbucha, baptizing it in the name of Lazarus, whom Christ resurrected in Bethany of Palestine.
The first stone cathedral of the hermitage, the Savior of Transfiguration, in its appearance resembled the first Christian churches, for example, St. Sophia of Constantinople. The temple is small, but gives the impression of strength and power.
The cathedral is very unusual. According to the archbishop, on the first floor the altar was in the form of a cave. Above it is Mount Tabor, covered with moss, decorated with flowers and figures of animals. The top served as the altar of the upper temple, in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord.
The whole structure of the temple allowed pilgrims to see firsthand the connection of two Gospel events: Resurrection and Transfiguration.
The appearance of the cathedral changed greatly after numerous reconstructions in the 19th century.
By decree of Paul I, a monastery was established on the site of the hermitage. The monastery was small, “school”. All her activities were related to the seminary.
In the 19th century, a new, two-storey Tikhvin Cathedral, a bell tower, a stone fence and even a 3-storey hotel for pilgrims were built on the territory.
In 1925 the monastery was closed.
Restoration of the monastery began in 1998. All church utensils were donated by the Lavra. The garments are the servants of the nearest parishes.
In the building of the old seminary opened a medical center for pilgrims, children’s art school.
In 2001, the monastery became a compound of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.
In 2007, the restoration of the Transfiguration Cathedral began.
It ended in 2011. We built a cathedral and a bell tower. Bells were cast and installed.
In the same year, the Treasury Corps was repaired and the brethren moved from the wagons to stone housing.
At the time of writing, work is underway to restore the Cathedral of the Descent of the Holy Spirit.
