Nikolo-Korolsky Monastery, Severodvinsk

The Northern Dvina has 4 mouths. Near one of them, about 1410 there was a monastery. It was founded by Euthymius, the enlightener of the Corons. The monastery failed to flourish. After 10 years it was looted by the Norwegians, and a year later there was a big fire. The monastery was in desolation for a long time.

However, in 1471 2 sons of Boretsky and his wife, Martha drowned in the sea. When the bodies were found, they were buried in the monastery. Marfa Boretskaya, better known as Marfa-posadnitsa, wrote off the monastery part of their lands, gave utensils.

Alas, in an unequal struggle, the Novgorodians lost to Ivan the Terrible, Marfa was exiled to Novgorod, but already Nizhny. Dark times have come for the monastery.

But the proximity to the sea and the convenient pier helped it blossom again. The way to northern Europe along the Northern Dvina and further, by sea to Norway, Denmark, Sweden, England was convenient and safe.

In 1555, the Moscow Company was established, which carried out trade operations between Russia and England. Trade flourished, the port grew and expanded, the monastery recovered from ruin.

By the end of the 17th century, stone buildings had already been built:

The Assumption Church;
● St. Nicholas Cathedral;
● Bell tower with stone passages;

Alas, in 1774, Catherine II issued a decree on the jurisdiction of peasants. The land from the monastery is taken, and so much money is allocated that it is difficult to feed, not that the construction is started.

In 1905 there were only 3 monks in the monastery. Unsurprisingly, it was one of the first to be shut down when the fight against religion began. Since 1920, the premises were dilapidated and destroyed. First there was a colony, and then the agricultural artel.

In 1935, part of the wooden walls with the Gate Tower was dismantled and taken to the open-air museum in Kolomenskoye. In 1936, the construction of the shipyard began. The buildings of the monastery were used for dormitories, offices, and even production facilities.

Thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts, in 1974 the premises of the monastery were recognized as historical objects and taken under the protection of the state. The case ended with cosmetic repairs, and renovation of the roof.

In 1990, some of the premises were returned to the churches, but since they are located on the territory of a security facility, access to them is difficult. Therefore, the temple was given the status of a factory church. There are regular worship services, as well as baptisms and weddings.

In 2009, a patriarchal service was held in Nikolsky Cathedral. Patriarch Kirill celebrated a midnight vigil there in honor of the Council of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Solovetsk.

In 2012, georadar surveys were carried out and found the burial, presumably of Saints Felix and his brother, Antony. These are the sons of Martha, who drowned in the sea. At the place of burial put a bowed cross and began to make prayers. Felix and Antony are considered the heavenly patrons of Severodvinsk.
