The Church of the Intercession of the Virgin on the moat, was founded in 1555, in commemoration of the capture of Kazan.
The main tent temple is surrounded by 8 smaller ones, with chapters. All buildings are built on one basis.
Each temple reflects a certain stage of taking Kazan:
1. An attack began on Pokrov, as a result of which the city fell. The central temple was dedicated to the Protection of the Virgin.
2. On the day of Cyprian and Justinia, the city officially surrendered.
3. On the Day of the Patriarchs of Constantinople, Russian troops won the victory on the Arsk field
4. On the day of Gregory of Armenia, the storming of the city began.
5. On the day of Alexander Svirsky, they defeated the Crimean army, which was in a hurry to help Kazan.
6. On the day of Varlam Khutynsky, Ivan the Terrible returned with victory to Moscow.
7. In the conquered Kazan, the monastery of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity was founded, in Moscow a temple was dedicated to it.
8. The entrance of the Lord into Jerusalem had a symbolic meaning for believers, the triumph of faith.
The ninth temple has nothing to do with the victory over Kazan. In 1555, the icon of Nikola Velikoretsky was brought to Moscow by a procession. Along the way, the icon was accompanied by miracles and signs.
Although the icon was kept in the Assumption Cathedral, the 9th church received the name of the saint. The list with the miraculous icon for this church was made by Metropolitan Makariy.
In 1588, another chapel was added to the cathedral, in honor of the Moscow fool Vasily the Blessed. Vasily was respected and feared by Ivan the Terrible, revered by ordinary Muscovites. Miracles were performed during the life of the Blessed One, and after his death their number increased. Basil was canonized in 1588, and his body was transferred to a silver rakka in a new church named after him.
The cathedral survived several fires, its appearance changed as a result of repair and restoration.
In 1672, another chapel was added to the building, in honor of another Moscow fool, John the Blessed. At the same time, the church of St. Theodosius was built over the temple of Basil the Blessed. In 1680 a new belfry was built. Its bells were dismantled and melted into
1929.
The cathedral was lucky, its importance as a historical monument was so obvious that the state took the building under protection in 1918. This did not save from the ban to hold services, but at least it was not blown up like the Church of Christ the Savior.
In the building opened the Museum “Pokrovsky Cathedral”. Already in the 20s restoration work was carried out. The second restoration came in the 60s. The cathedral gradually returned to its original appearance. During the third stage, in the 70s, frescoes of the 17th century were discovered. The fourth restoration began in the 90s and continues to this day.
In 1991, divine services resumed in the cathedral, but it is still a branch of the State Historical Museum.
