Cherdyn St. John theological Monastery, Cherdyn

Long before the appearance of the city of Chardyn, in the 15th century Bishop Jonah founded on the banks of the beautiful river Kolva. The event was important for Orthodoxy, the indigenous inhabitants of Perm were just beginning to accept the Orthodox faith. Therefore, the monastery was patronized first by the Great Perm princes, and then by the kings. Ivan the Terrible even visited the monastery. Granted many privileges and lands.

But the golden age of the monastery did not last long. Under Catherine the Second, the monastery was closed, the land was taken away. His temples became parish churches.

However, in 1910, the monastery was reborn as a female. After 9 years, it was closed again, the sisters were expelled, valuables were taken away. Some of the nuns went with the white army to the east. Shortly lingering in Vladivostok, the nuns found themselves in the Chinese Harbin, where they founded a monastery in honor of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God.

Revival of the monastery took place in 2004. The abode became male again.

The Theological Temple is permanent. Services were not held there only during the war. This is the first stone building in the Urals. In the temple preserved iconostasis, wooden doors.

Now there are 20 inhabitants in the monastery. There is a Sunday school for children and adults, a library. There’s a house for pilgrims.
