Yuriev Monastery in Novgorod

The epithet “the most” can be applied to many things and events related to the Yuriev Monastery. It is one of the oldest in Russia. In 1030, Yaroslav, nicknamed the Wise, went on a trip to the Chud. The trip was successful. The prince, in baptism of George (Yuriy), laid the city of Yuriev (Tartu), and temples dedicated to St. George in Kiev and Novgorod. A community was gradually formed around the church.

On the site of the wooden church, the son of Yaroslav, Prince Mstislav, built a stone temple. The first time the name of the architect was mentioned in connection with its construction. The chronicle notes that in 1119, Peter worked on the construction of the temple. St. George’s Cathedral became the site of the last
Reassurance of the Novgorod princes. The official chronicle of Novgorod was conducted with him. In the 12th century, the cathedral was painted, but in 1902 they were barbarously “renovated”. The original painting was preserved only in the slopes of the windows. To see it, you need to climb the 93 steps of the stair tower.

The decoration of the cathedral was luxurious: a huge, iconostasis, seven-tiered, with royal gates of silver, a marble throne, silver robes. The ancient icon of St. George was completely covered with precious stones, and the Countess Orlova donated images of the Mother of God from
emerald.

The monastery was also the richest. He was protected by the princes, giving not only money, but also land. There was a huge land in the possession of the monastery. In the 18th century, they were taken away and the monastery became not the most, but still rich. In the 19th century, he had influential patrons: Tsar Alexander I and Countess Orlova-Chesme. Thanks to the Countess, the monastery unfolded extensive construction. Several buildings were built, for the brethren and for the hospital. They built the Savior Cathedral, the Church of All Saints, the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross. The monastery had a tall, very beautiful bell tower.

Alas, in the 20s of the last century, all values were taken out of the monastery, the brothers dispersed, and the buildings began to be used for everyday needs.

In 1991, the buildings, dilapidated and neglected, returned the churches. And in 1995 the monastery was revived spiritually, the first inhabitants appeared. Then began the restoration, which continues to this day.

In 2004, a spiritual school was opened at the monastery.
