Trinity-Sergius Varnitsky Monastery, Rostov

Many Russian monasteries have a tragic fate. To them belongs the Trinity-Sergievskaya Varnitsky monastery.

The first written mention of the monastery dates back to the very beginning of the 17th century. But legend claims that it was founded in honor of the fifth anniversary of the discovery of the relics of Sergius of Radonezh, in 1427.

The monastery arose on the place where Bartholomew was born and grew up, who went down in history as a spiritual leader, Sergius of Radonezh.

The absence of rich patrons, significant shrines and remoteness from the city led to the fact that the monastery was poor for a long time. The first stone church was built only in the 18th century, with money donated by the Rostov bishop. It was a temple in the name of the Holy Trinity.

In the first half of the 19th century, donations from Rostov merchants began to arrive in the monastery. The abode has grown. There built the Vvedenskaya church, the Winter temple. Renovated the iconostasis, brought several shrines. Now it was no longer an abandoned, unknown monastery, but a prosperous, famous monastery not only in Rostov.

In the monastery was a chronicle of events. Now it is stored in the Rostov Museum. All events were celebrated there: visits of superiors, construction of temples. There were miracles. In the middle of the 19th century, cholera raged across the edge. No one was sick in the monastery. In 1909, a woman was healed, who was brought to the temple, and after ardent prayer, she left on her own feet.

Alas, the revolution broke out and in 1919, by decree of the new government, the monastery was ordered to close. The buildings were destroyed, a road was paved through the territory.

Until 1991, desolation and chaos reigned in this place. Then the land was returned to the churches.

But since 1992, a new era has begun. The first thing that the representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church did was put a wooden chapel on the site of the Trinity Cathedral. They cleaned the holy well, protected it with shade.

The Trinity-Sergius Lavra recognized the monastery as its farmstead. This meant helping to restore the monastery and provide spiritual guidance.

By 2003, the Vvedensky temple was repaired, the Trinity Cathedral was rebuilt, the bell tower was erected.

In 2014, the main temple — the Cathedral of Sergius of Radonezh was consecrated.

“Please those who wander,” said St. Sergius. This is the covenant that lives. It receives pilgrims from all over Russia. On the territory there is a hotel for pilgrims, a cafe where you can have a snack. There are guided tours for those who wish.
