The Temple of the Transfiguration of the Lord from Kozlievo, Museum of Wooden Architecture, Suzdal

In the Suzdal Museum of wooden architecture there are many architectural monuments. But the temple of the Transfiguration of God stands out from all. A true example of Russian church architecture, it was built without a single nail. In the ordinary Russian village of Kozlievo in 1756
A church that didn’t just survive the shock of time. After 300 years, it was dismantled, and then reassembled in a new place.

The ability of Russian masters to create beauty by simple means is amazing. With an axe, and with a cane, they built a temple, from the look of which the spirit is breathtaking. All the classical canons of Russian church architecture are observed. The Church strives upward as if floating in the air. To achieve this effect helped the tiers that make up the building. The basis of the temple is quadrangular structures, on which there are octagons, which decrease from above. The architecture is very harmonious, the view of the temple gives the impression of solemnity. The central part has side porches. They are dedicated to Simeon the Stylite and Nicholas the Wonderworker. On the west side of the church there is a refectory. It’s fringed by an open gallery.

Inside the temple was painted and fragments preserved. Unknown village artists painted the temple with the faces of saints. The carved iconostasis and the Royal Gates amaze with carvings and attention to detail.

In 2011, lightning struck the temple. The fire started. The central head and drum burned. But the traditions of Russian architects are still alive today. Six months later, the carpenters completely restored the church.
