Holy Spirit Monastery, Skopino

During the Battle of Kulikovo, according to legend, one of the severely wounded soldiers drank water from the stream, washed his wounds and was healed. In gratitude, he stayed in the desert. One day, Sergius of Radonezh came to him in a vision and blessed him for the construction of the monastery.

Another version of events, not so interesting. The eternally hostile princes of Moscow and Ryazan reconciled in 1385 and founded the Trinity Desert in honor of this event.

The first mention of the Trinity Monastery dates back to 1620. The monastery was small and poor. In 1764, it was closed, and the buildings began to be used as an almshouse. However, after 20 years, the monastery burned to the ground. The brethren were transferred to the preserved compound, the monastery was opened, but they were no longer called Trinity, but Holy Spirit.

For a long time, the monastery had 2 churches6 in honor of the icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir and in honor of the Descent of the Holy Spirit. But in 1880 a new, five-domed temple with two chapels was built.

The monastery was closed immediately after the revolution. Educational institutions were located in the buildings.

Now it is the bishop’s courtyard of the city of Skopino. In 2013, a house church was built on the territory of the monastery. It was dedicated by the Hieromartyr Ignatius (Skopinsky). Divine services are performed in this church.

In 2017, the monastery was reopened. The house is small and has fewer than 10 brothers.

There are a lot of relics in the monastery:

  • Theophanes the Recluse
  • Basil the Great
  • Luki of Crimea
  • Serbian Martyrs
  • Vonifatia of Tarsus
  • Spiridon of Trimifutsky
  • Nikolai Serbski
