Today the Russian Church joyfully rejoices, as a mother her child, she glorifies her new martyrs and confessors.
The history of the Russian Orthodox Church is the history of the feat of faith, suffering and death for it. Through many trials were prepared to pass saints, martyrs and confessors in order to preserve Orthodoxy in the era of unjust persecution of the Church, which was carried out by the leaders of the country since 1917.
The Church honors the heroes of faith in February. The church holiday is always celebrated on Sunday. The official date is February 7, but if it is not a Sunday, the martyrs are remembered on the next Sunday.
The celebration was established relatively recently, in 1991, but the decision to commemorate the martyrs on this day was made at the Local Council in 1918.
The date was not chosen by chance. On this day, Vladimir Epiphany died.
Metropolitan of Kiev and Galitsky was brutally murdered by the Red Guards in 1918. In 1992 he was glorified as a Hieromartyr.
Officially, more than 1,700 New Martyrs are mentioned in the cathedral, but the church on this day remembers all those innocently killed for the Christian faith. In 1937 alone, about 10,000 church ministers and ordinary believers died. 20,000 were repressed. Their lives and their deaths are a lesson of faith, loyalty and self-sacrifice for all of us.
These martyrs are not saints from the distant past. These are our grandparents, grandparents, fathers. In difficult times, they were persecuted and martyred to preserve their faith for future generations. These people are true heroes who bear the image of our Lord.
Let us remember all those who gave their lives for their faith in Christ and defended the truth with blood. Let them serve us as a glorious example of serving the Lord.
