St. George of Peloponnesia

The Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. George of Maleia, a Byzantine monk of the ninth century, who spent his whole life in a monastery on Mount Maleia in the Peloponnese.
George chose the path of strict asceticism and silence. He completely renounced worldly attachments, focusing on prayer and spiritual labor. The fame of his asceticism attracted people who sought guidance and spiritual support.
The monk died in the same monastery where he carried out his monastic feat, and was buried there. After his death, his relics became a source of healing — many cases of recovery of pilgrims were recorded. In church hymns, George is called an earthly angel and wonderworker.
Mount Maleia during the Byzantine Empire was one of the centers of monastic life in southern Greece. The local monasteries participated in the spread of Christianity throughout the region and served as centers of spiritual enlightenment.
The memory of St. George of Maleia is celebrated in the Orthodox calendar.
