Holy Apostle Barnabas

In Cyprus, in a deeply religious Jewish family, a baby was born, who was named Joseph. When he was 16, his parents sent him to study in Jerusalem. There Joseph met another disciple, Saul, and became his best friend. However, after a while, the friends became rivals. Joseph, after listening to Christ, believed in Him as the Messiah. He was baptized and took a different name. He became known as Barnabas. After Christ, in addition to the 12 apostles, chose another 70, Barnabas was among them.

Saul, on the contrary, began to persecute Christians in every way. But by the great mercy of God, Saul was transformed after a miraculous encounter with Christ, already crucified and resurrected, on his way to Damascus. He changed his name because he wanted nothing to do with his life. He took the name Paul. When Paul returned to Jerusalem, the apostles distrusted him. Barnabas believed that Paul had nothing to do with Saul. He highly recommended him. Together they traveled throughout Asia Minor, carrying the gospel to Jews and Gentiles. Details of Barnabas can be found in the book of Acts of the Holy Gospel.

At the end of his life, Barnabas returned to Cyprus, became a bishop and suffered for his faith. The Jews stoned him to death for preaching about Christ. They tried to burn the body to disperse the ashes, but the fire did not cause any damage. The Apostle Mark placed the body of Barnabas in the tomb (cave). Over the years, however, the place has been forgotten.

In the 5th century, in a dream, the Archbishop of Cyprus had a vision that was repeated three times. He clearly saw the burial place of Barnabas. Having found the place seen in a dream, Archbishop

Anthimius found there a box with the relics of Barnabas and scrolls with the Gospel of Matthew. He immediately went with the shrines to Constantinople. They immediately appreciated the importance of the find. In gratitude, the Church of Cyprus was made apostolic. They have special rights that still exist today.

In the Kykki Monastery on the island of Cyprus is still kept part of the right hand of the apostle.
