Saint Maximian, Patriarch of Constantinople

The earthly path of the Primate of the Church of Constantinople Maximian ended on April 12, 434. That date came on Great Thursday. He took a key place in history in the autumn of 431, when he headed the patriarchate immediately after the removal of Nestorius.

The future archpastor was born in Rome. His family was distinguished by wealth and deep piety. The young man sent the resulting state to the construction of tombs for deceased ascetics, whose righteousness was widely recognized.

Avoiding publicity, he left his hometown and settled in Constantinople. He lived a quiet, secluded life there. These qualities were noticed by Patriarch Sisinius, ordaining Maximian to the priesthood.

When the teachings of Nestorius were condemned, and he himself lost the throne, the Emperor Theodosius the Younger approved the candidacy of a modest presbyter. The official enthronement took place on October 25, 431. Maximian’s primatial ministry lasted a little more than two years and ended with a peaceful death in the days of Holy Week.
