Trinity Ilyinsky Monastery, Romashkino, Tver region

In 1893, Hieromonk Olympia walked through the cities and villages of the Tver province with a miraculous icon of St. Sergius of Radonezh. In the small village of Ivankovo, Ivan Kruglov was attached to the icon. So much grace and peace fell on him that he decided to donate a large sum to God’s pleasing cause. In 1895, he petitioned the Synod to establish a women’s community. Ivan Kruglov promised to leave all his property of the monastery. In 1896, the community was established.

From the village of Stepanova, a wooden church was brought, which was visited not only by nuns, but also by residents of nearby villages. The temple was dedicated to Alexander Nevsky and Sergius of Radonezh.

Despite the fact that the temple was small, rustic, unique icons were kept there. From Mount Athos, from the Panteleimon Monastery, icons of the Holy Trinity and St. Panteleimon were sent as a gift to the church. From St. Andrew’s Skete, the icon of the Mother of God “Consolation in sorrows and sorrows” was transferred. Local residents donated to the icon of Sergius of Radonezh. It was written in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, lighted there, and then delivered to Romashkino.

2 years after the opening, the community already had 40 nuns and 16 novices. In 1908 it was transformed into the Ilyinsky Holy Trinity convent. In the same year, a new stone cathedral was laid.

The wooden church has become too small. In 1912, a cross was placed on the head of the cathedral. The monastery opened a parish school with a hostel for visiting students.

In 1917 the persecution began. Under various pretexts, premises and land were taken from the monastery until it was finally closed in 1933. Having served as a warehouse and vegetable storehouse, the monastery became an orphanage. During the Patriotic War, children were evacuated, and a hospital was opened in the buildings of the monastery. After the end of the war, an orphanage was reopened here, later a disabled home. Now there is a psychoneurological clinic on the territory. Where the icons and utensils of the temple are located is unknown.
