The Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin from the Hill, Kostroma

Not far from the village of Holm, in the Galichsky district there was a small wooden church. It has stood for centuries, a common belief that since 1552, but some scholars dispute this date.

After the revolution, the temple was closed, services were banned. Gradually, the church began to collapse.
In the spring of 1945, the ceiling collapsed in the building. The heads were on the floor, inside the room. But dilapidated and forgotten, the church continued to stand.

When it was decided to build the Gorky HPP, dozens of villages and villages fell into the flood zone. An expedition of the Academy of Sciences was organized to determine the value of flooded objects. For architectural monuments, it was decided to create an open-air museum: Kostroma Sloboda.

Fortunately, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Cathedral is a unique example of Russian architecture.
The building was dismantled and transported to Kostroma, where it was completely restored.

The architecture of the church is unusual. This is a tiered five-domed church with a subclete. And it is obvious that at first the temple was tented, and later it was rebuilt and made five-headed. The basis of the building — 2 eights (octagonal logging) One basic, powerful, the second light, elegant. On top, on thin drums, onions are fixed. On three sides, the building is surrounded by a coil — a hanging gallery on strong pillars.

It was not possible to establish the time of construction exactly. The inscription on the cross says that the temple was consecrated in the summer of 7000 (1500). A later entry in the temple inventory calls the date 7060, which is already 1552. At the same time, the temple was clearly rebuilt in the 18th century, when Patriarch Nikon banned tent churches. There is a record about this construction, where the church is called “newly built”.

The temple can only be viewed from the outside, access to it is closed.
