Old Saransk Cathedral: 333 years at the edge of the forest
In the heart of Saransk, in the shadow of nine storeys and a shopping center, hides a snow-white temple, which in 2026 turned 333 years old. St. John theological Cathedral – or simply “Old Cathedral”, as the townspeople affectionately call it – is the oldest preserved building not only of Saransk, but of the whole of Mordovia.
From a wooden church to a stone wonder
In 1693, the Streltsy of the Saransk fortress united with unknown benefactors and erected a stone temple in their settlement — the first stone house in the whole city. Built by Moscow masters in stylebaroque. znanierussia.ru +1
But the history of the place goes even deeper. In 1873, during the repair of the throne inside, an antiminx was found from a thick canvas, dated 1600, with the inscription “John the Theologian”. Researcher Saransk Professor I. D. Voronin suggested that here since the time of Ivan the Terrible there was a settlement Ivanovo (Theologian), whose inhabitants built the first wooden church.

Trial and rescue
In 1938, the temple was closed – allegedly because of “the dilapidation that threatens to collapse”. The NKVD archive was placed in the building. From 1991 to 2006, the cathedral was the seat of the ruling bishop of the Saransk and Mordovian diocese. In 2006, this status passed to the new Cathedral of Fedor Ushakov.
Revival 2021–2026
By the early 2020s, the temple was under threat: the foundation lost its strength, the walls went cracked, the roof came into disrepair. A large-scale restoration went on for five years, and all this time of worship.never stopped. Shrines
