Obvinsky Upper-Yazvensky Uspensky Assumption Women’s Monastery in Karagay district of Perm region

Where the Obva River carries its waters past the village of Karagai, and the quiet Yazva flows into it, the air still seems thick with legends. In this place, prayer was born not in the silence of the cell, but in the formidable vision and desperate fear of the common peasant. The history of the Upper Yazvensk monastery began not with a royal decree, but with a summer day in 1685, when Rodion Novikov went to the forest and came face to face with the world that lies beyond the ordinary.

It was not quiet angels who appeared to him, but “terrible people” with hair of the color of fire and darkness, and next to him was a beast of terrifying appearance. These were not just monsters, but revived curses: black infirmity, fierce firefighter and cattle pestilence. They became the background for shining purity — figures in snow-white robes. The voice, who called herself the Mother of the Redeemer, did not demand worship. He demanded a case. The icon from the Christmas Church had to go into the wilderness, on the arrow of the rivers Tyushe and Yazva, so that there stood a chapel, and then the monastery. The place where the earth trembled from «obscene warfare» and drunkenness was to become an island of brotherly prayer.

The command was fulfilled, but the miraculous image seemed not to want to stay within the old walls. The icon of the Assumption itself left the village — it was found on the forest Gary, on the very place where the monastery domes were destined to rise. So, in 1686, there was a monastery, and in 1706 it was crowned by a wooden Assumption Church, which became the heart of the monastery. Here, above the meadows, a healing spring hammered, as if noting the agreement of heaven with the choice of people. Life was warmed by prayer and work, but, as often happens, the state blade was sharper than the spiritual bonds: Catherine’s decree of 1764 left only the parish church from the monastery.

The silence lasted for almost a century and a half, in 1905 to replace the harsh male austerity for female softness and perseverance. The revived public monastery became the center of mercy for the district, but its century was tragically short. After the revolution, the walls were empty, and prayer was replaced by oblivion. However, the land involved in the miracle does not just let go. In 1997, as if responding to that old call on the forest trail, the nuns returned here. Today, the Holy Dormition Monastery stands as an invincible rock among the worldly sea, reminding that sometimes a strict voice in the deep forest is the beginning of a great mercy stretched through the centuries.
