Cathedral of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God, Krasnoyarsk

The Cathedral of the Krasnoyarsk Diocese is the oldest stone building preserved in the city. It was built in 1795 with the money of parishioners. The church was dedicated to the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God, also at the request of parishioners. Initially, the church was planned to be consecrated in honor of the Epiphany.
It was already the third Church of the Intercession. The first one was destroyed by fire. The second, literally, was dismantled into pieces to equip a stone temple. So, in the cathedral there were mica windows from an old wooden church, 3 bells, all church utensils.
But the iconostasis was carved a new one, especially for a stone temple.
At the cathedral there was a church library, a parish school, several schools.
The building was rebuilt in 1840 and since then no significant changes have been made.
In the wake of the fight against religion, in the 30s, the temple was closed. However, in 1944 it was reopened. Alas, not for long. In 1962, the decision to close again was made. Although the architecture of the building has been preserved, the interior decoration has undergone changes. The frescoes were covered with plaster, the walls and ceilings were decorated with stucco. The building itself was repainted.
In 1989, the church was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, and in 1990 the first Liturgy was already served there.
In the course of restoration work, started in 2006, the building was returned to a snow-white appearance, with green domes. The walls were painted again. During the renovation, an 18th century fresco was discovered.
Currently, the Pokrovsky temple is a cathedral.
