Family is a small Church

When God created man, He looked at him and said something amazing: “It is not good for man to be alone.” It would seem that just now the entire creation was assessed as “very good” — and suddenly for the first time something was said: not good. The man needed another. Not an assistant in the sense of labor, not a functional partner, but a living being, next to whom you can be yourself. This is how the family appeared.

This is not a human invention. Not the result of a social contract, not a product of the evolution of social relations. The family is God’s plan for man, and this plan is older than any state, any law, any culture. God blessed the first people and said: be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. He didn’t just allow it, he blessed it. That is, he gave it strength, joy and meaning.

But if in the Old Testament the family was more likely a way of procreation and preservation of the people, then in the New Testament it opens up a completely different dimension. The family becomes a “small Church” — not in a figurative sense, not as a beautiful metaphor, but in essence. She is part of the Universal Church, her cell, her living image.

The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Ephesians speaks about marriage in such a way that these words take your breath away. The husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the Church. And then, so that no one misunderstands, he adds: husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for her. That is, the head is not the one who commands. The head is the one who gives himself. Who will lay down his life. Who loves so much that he is ready to die. The husband in a Christian marriage is an image of Christ. The wife is the image of the Church. And when they understand this, marriage ceases to be just a life together.

In the sacrament of wedding, grace is given to the spouses. Not moral support, not psychological reinforcement — but the real power of God. It is needed to build a union in like-mindedness and love, to be one soul and one body, to give birth to children and raise them in the faith. A wedding is not a beautiful ceremony before a beautiful life. This is help on a difficult path, because this path is through yourself, through your ego, through your weaknesses.

Why the Church at all? People come together to escape. Not in the sense of “separating from the bad ones,” but in the sense of helping each other reach God. One can’t do it alone. It’s not about willpower or perseverance. It’s just how a person works: he needs fellow travelers. And family are your closest travel companions. The closest ones God has given.

For a Christian, the two main commandments — love for God and love for neighbor — begin at home. Not in a church, not in a parish, not in a charity foundation. And at breakfast, when someone hasn’t gotten enough sleep and someone needs to give in. In the evening, when someone is wrong and you need to remain silent. At night, when a child is sick and both get up without agreeing. Praying for each other, bearing each other’s burdens, and being humble—these are not nice words. This is work, and hard work.

They also say: the family is the image of the parish community. A husband, a father is like a priest of a small Church. His wife, mother, is his assistant, just as a deacon serves at the throne. Children are the flock. And this does not mean that the father “leads”. This means that he prays first. He repents first. He blesses first. And mom is the heart of this small church. Without it, everything falls apart, just as a body cannot live without a heart.

Family is the greatest gift. And like any gift, it can be lost. Not from troubles, not from external circumstances — but from inattention, from habit, from the fact that you stop noticing who lives next to you. Christ said: what God has joined together, let no man separate. These words are not just a prohibition on divorce. This is the promise that what God has put together holds together stronger than it seems. But also responsibility: take care. Like the apple of my eye. Like the only thing that cannot be restored.

Family is for life. Not “as long as there are feelings,” not “as long as it’s convenient,” not “as long as the goals coincide.” And for the rest of your life — because that’s how it’s meant to be. And in this plan, if accepted, there is a peace that cannot be found anywhere else.
