About the Mother of God

Mary is the real, earthly Mother of God incarnate. When Archangel Gabriel comes to Her with news, he calls Her “Gracious One.” The entire Bible — and this is amazing — no longer applies this word to anyone.

Seven centuries before the birth of Christ, the prophet Isaiah predicted something that is impossible to believe:“Behold, a virgin will be with child and give birth to a Son, and they will call His name Immanuel,”which means “God with us” (Is 7:14).

She began to be revered even at life. Her dear Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cannot contain her reverence:“Blessed are You among women, and blessed is the fruit of Your womb! And where is this to me, that the Mother of my Lord has come to me?” (Luke 1:42-43). And the Mother of God Herself in the Gospel speaks of Her coming glory:“from now on all generations will call Me blessed” (Luke 1:48). Divine services, prayer services, icon painting — all this is the fulfillment of those gospel words.

Through Her, the Lord did the most important thing for people: he became human and redeemed them from eternal death. Those who understand this cannot help but love both God and His Mother — after all, She served our salvation with Her virtues. She is the Mother of our Heavenly Father, and therefore our Mother. We are all brothers and sisters to each other, not only in Christ, but also because we have one common Mother.

The miraculous intercession of the Mother of God

Summer of 1395. Tamerlane invaded Russian lands. He boasted that where his horse passed, grass no longer grew. Yelets had already fallen, many people had been exterminated, the horde was moving towards Moscow. Grand Duke Vasily Dimitrievich gathered an army and stood near Kolomna, waiting for the enemy. The miraculous Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God was solemnly transferred from Vladimir to Moscow. The temples were full of crying people, countless candles were burning in front of the images. Residents of the capital, together with the princely family and clergy, came out to Kuchkovo Field to meet the icon.

And a miracle happened. At the very hour when the icon was greeted in Moscow, Tamerlane was sleeping in his tent. In a dream he saw a high mountain. Saints with golden staffs descended along it towards him, and above them in the air — in radiance, in majesty for which there are no words — stood the Virgin. Thousands of Angels with fiery swords crowded around Her. Tamerlane woke up in horror and called his wise men. “This Virgin,” they answered, “is the Intercessor of the Russians, the Mother of the Christian God. Her power is irresistible.» Tamerlane ordered the troops to turn around and leave. “Tamerlane fled, driven by the power of the Blessed Virgin,” the chronicler wrote (Moscow Patericon).
