Help yourself, today is the same day.

Every morning there was a small announcement in the elevator.

More often than not, the content was, «Smile, today is a special day.»

Sometimes it was a reminder to «Hug your loved ones,» «Remember those you forgot about.»

People were already used to these inexplicable notes, and each time they waited for the morning to learn the reminder of today.

Before the New Year, a large mailbox appeared in the entrance.

It was not only for children but also for adults.

The latter were ashamed to participate in this performance, but still, succumbing to temptation, they also tweeted a couple of lines and lowered them into a box.

They remained anonymous, and that reassured them.

But at the same time, each of these adults became one step closer to the joyful thrill that existed only in childhood.

Once a month someone brought candy.

He put it on a stool and wrote, “Help yourself, today is the day.” The children asked permission from the parents, and they did not dare to try the delicacy.

But gradually, people got used to it and ceased to see deception in everything. Their anxieties subsided, and someone’s good heart began to build a bridge of trust.

Of course, they wanted to know who it was. But they never managed to catch a well-wisher.

Then people stopped noticing all these things, taking them for granted.

But once in the elevator did not appear cherished lines.

Just passed the rumor that there was not one man over whom many laughed.

He wore sweatpants in winter and summer, and he always smelled garlic. The children shunned him and the adults grumbled.

That day a boy came very upset and said to his father, «Dad, I want to continue Uncle Igor’s work.» I already helped him put up ads, but now… Can I write them myself?

Dad warned him, “If people find out, they’ll probably laugh at you.” You remember the Beast?

To which the boy seriously said: Let them laugh. I want everyone to feel good. You said laughter was great. Isn’t it?

The father ruffled his son’s hair and said, «I’ll help you.» Just tell me what to do.”

Every night, the boy prepared a small note that he hung in the elevator with a reminder of something important.

Once a month, just the day Uncle Igor left, he used his pocket money to buy a lot of candy and put it in his usual place. Like a man did on his retirement day.

On New Year’s Eve, he made a mailbox and gave people the opportunity to write a letter that was destined to remain unanswered.

Dad always helped him as he promised.

The boy knew that Uncle Igor was looking at him and smiling. He is glad that someone continues his good work.

If anyone is laughing at him, that’s good. Laughter is great!
