At the turn of the two centuries, the 3rd and 4th, at the boundary of two cultures — pagan and Christian, lived prominent church figures. Servants of the church, they learned the way of asceticism, with readiness and great desire spent years in the desert. But when the need arose, they returned to the people to defend Christianity. The names of these men are inscribed in gold in the history of the church: Basil the Great, John Chrysostom, Gregory the Theologian.
Their influence on the Christian movement was so great that many years after the death of the Enlightenment, serious debate arose in the church about which of them contributed more to the development of Christianity. Theologians were divided into camps, counting themselves among the Basilians, Gregorians or Johnites.
The controversy ended in 1084. Metropolitan Ivhait, the pious author of many chants, John Mavrod had a vision. 3 enlighteners appeared to him and ordered him to stop the discussions. They claimed to be equal before God, and to put an end to the debate, they ordered a common feast.
This event had several consequences:
John’s authority was so great that no one disputed his story.
● Disputes in the church ceased, and the followers of each theologian united in
glorifying all three.
The Metropolitan composed the service on the day of remembrance, choosing the date — January 30 (12)
February).
On this day, we pay tribute to the Patriarchs of the Church, who are an example of evangelical perfection, humility and service. We pray for the protection and blessing of the saints, who were fiery prayer-books, consolators, pillars on which the church rests today and forever.
