According to legend, the robe of the Virgin was kept for a long time in Nazareth. But in the 5th century, during the reign of the emperor Leo was moved to Constantinople. A church was built specifically for her in Vlahern, a district of Constantinople.
Many times the Mother of God saved the city from invasion. In 860, Prince Askold of Kiev besieged Constantinople. The Patriarch urged the citizens to pray and repent. Riza solemnly carried along the walls, and then immersed in the sea.
For unexplained reasons, Askold lifted the siege and sailed home.
Patriarch Photius wrote: “The invasion of the enemies was unexpected, and their retreat was unexpected.” Nothing other than the intercession of the Virgin could explain this event.

In memory of this event, the first akathist was written to the Virgin Mary. It is read at the service on Akathist Saturday.
The first temple in honor of this event was built in Russia during the reign of Andrei Bogolyubsky.
In the middle of the 15th century, the rise was divided into parts and its owners became several monasteries and temples in Orthodox countries. Part of the vestments were brought to Russia by Dionysius, who was Archbishop of Suzdal. But they kept the shrine in Moscow.
In 1451, the Mother of God saved the First Throne from the Tatar invasion. On the night of July 15, exactly on the day of Riza’s position in Vlahern, Metropolitan Jonah walked around the city walls with a crustacean in which a particle of the garment was stored. Suddenly, the enemy fell into turmoil and lifted the siege, going back to the steppe.
In honor of this event, the temple of the painting was erected. It served as the home church of the patriarchs until the church of the 12 apostles was built.
