In the church calendar will appear a new memorable date: the acquisition of the relics of Dimitry Donskoy

An important event has taken place in the life of the Russian Orthodox Church: now every year on August 18 (August 5, old style), the day of finding the relics of the faithful Grand Duke Dimitri Donskoy will be celebrated. This decision was made by the Holy Synod at a meeting on October 22, 2026.

The history of this date began with restoration work in the Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. In July 2026, experts faced a difficult task: due to floor subsidence, there was a threat to the safety of ancient tombstones. When the workers dismantled the brickwork, three white-stone sarcophagi were found under it. One of them belonged to Dmitry Donskoy, the Grand Duke, whose name is firmly associated with the Battle of Kulikovo and the strengthening of Russia.

Confirming the authenticity of the remains required serious work. Anthropologists, historians and archaeologists joined the case. They compared the data, studied the features of the sarcophagus and conducted the necessary research. Comprehensive analysis left no doubt: before the experts really were the relics of Dimitri Donskoy.

The culmination was the solemn acquisition of the shrine on August 18, 2026. In the Archangel Cathedral, the service was headed by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill. He prayed, and the believers worshipped. At the same time, the main part of the relics was returned to the bush — so in the church tradition it is customary to store the holy remains, preserving their inviolability and holiness. Several particles were allocated for worship: they were taken to large churches, including the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and the main temple of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Some particles were brought to the frontline regions to support those who are in particular need of spiritual support.

This date will now become a constant in the church calendar. The Synod instructed the Synodal Liturgical Commission to prepare the text of a special service so that every year on the day of remembrance believers could pray to remember this event.

For many people, the history of finding relics is not just a church institution, but a living connection with the past. Dmitry Donskoy is perceived not only as a commander and ruler, but also as an example of courage, responsibility and loyalty to his convictions. The appearance of a new memorable date helps to preserve this memory and pass it on to future generations.
