The day Jesus was arrested, he was dressed like a typical Jew. On a long chiton without seams was thrown the upper cape — a riza. In the same clothes he was brought to crucifixion. There Christ was stripped, leaving only a loincloth. Clothing was usually given to those who carried out the execution. Heaton was woven in one piece, it was impossible to divide it. Soldiers cast lots for him. And the robe had stitches, so it was divided among the warriors conducting the crucifixion.
One of the parts came to Georgia and was stored there in the treasury of the Svetitskhoveli temple, in a small town of Mtskheta. In the 18th century (1617), Georgia was attacked by Persian troops. Having seized the temple, they took everything most valuable. We got a garment. The soldiers realized that this was no ordinary object and handed it over to Shah Abbas. After 8 years (1625), the Shah sent her to the first king of the Romanov family, Mikhail Fedorovich.
With a trepidation, the shrine was placed in a special ark and put in the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin. The holiday we now celebrate on July 23 was established at that time.
Parts of the riza were transferred to Kiev and St. Petersburg.
In 2002, quite unexpectedly, part of the robe was found in the vaults of the Yaroslavl Museum-Reserve. In 2004, it was transferred to the ROC. Until 2007 it was kept in the Tolga Monastery, then in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
A casket with a relic is carried out for worship once a year, on July 23. But in Ryazan, in the Church of the Nativity of Christ, a piece of the robe is available for worship every day.
