The Feast of the Merciful Savior and the Most Holy Mother of God

On August 14, the Orthodox Church celebrates the feast of the All-Merciful Savior and the Most Holy Mother of God. The celebration absorbed the Byzantine and Russian traditions. The first part dates back to the Constantinople custom of the ninth century. In August, when the city was suffering from epidemics, a particle of the Cross of the Lord was extracted from the imperial treasury. The relic was carried through the streets to consecrate space and protect against disease. The Greek word for the procession with the Cross in front, when translated into Slavic, received the meaning of “origin”. Hence the full name of the holiday is the origin of the honest trees of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord.

The second is related to the year 1164. Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky went on a campaign against the Volga Bulgars, having with him the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God and the image of the Honest Cross. According to legend, during the battle from the shrines emanated fiery rays that overshadowed the Russian army. The battle ended in victory. Almost simultaneously, the Byzantine emperor Manuel Comnenus triumphed in his battle at similar signs. In gratitude for heavenly intercession, both rulers agreed to establish a common festival.

The church service of this day includes the solemn taking of the Cross to the middle of the temple for worship of believers. The clergy perform prayers and sanctify water. From August 14, the Assumption Lent begins, which will last until August 27.

In the national calendar, the date was fixed as the Honey Savior. By mid-August, beekeepers completed the main collection of honey. The first honeycombs were brought to the temple, and after the rite of consecration they distributed food to those close to and in need. The festive table remained lean in accordance with the church charter.
