In the New Testament we learn about Mary, already chosen by the Lord, but there is nothing about her birth and childhood. Information about her unusual birth is drawn from the Holy Tradition. In particular, written in the second century Proto-Gospel of James.
We know that Mary was the son of King David and the son of Aaron. Their parents were Joachim and Anna. Their union was childless, which in Jewish culture was seen as a punishment for sins. But the faith of the couple was so great that even at an honorable age, they continued to pray for the sending of offspring. God has given them an incomparable reward. Not only did they have a daughter, they had the mother of Jesus.
Both spouses, who were far apart at the same time, had a vision that they would have a child. 9 months after this event, a girl was born. She was called Maria. At the age of 3, fulfilling a vow, her parents took her to the Temple, where they left her to gather wisdom and serve the Lord.
In official Christian literature, mentions of the holiday have been found since the 5th century, but Christmas was officially celebrated only at the turn of the 7th and 8th centuries. This day is a great day for every believer. Through her, Mary, all the prophecies of the Old Testament were embodied. Through her meekness and humility, humanity has received the greatest gift from the beginning of time: Christ. With her birth begins the path of reconciliation of a sinful man with the holy Lord. Through her the gift of eternal life appeared to us. Her willingness to serve, her love of God.
It is an example of true faith. This is what Elizabeth, the mother of John the Forerunner, called her: she believed.
With the Nativity of the Virgin begins the church year, just as with her birth came the time of the New Testament. The significance of the holiday is so great that it lasts as much as 5 days. The celebration of September 21 ends with a solemn liturgy and a procession of the cross.
