A new page has opened in the history of Russian Orthodoxy — the Liturgy of the Russian Orthodox Church was celebrated for the first time in Ghana. The event, which took place on October 4, 2026 in Accra, became not just a divine service, but a starting point for the development of the Orthodox community on the African continent.
The center of the celebration was the premises of the Russian House in the capital of Ghana. The service was led by Priest Georgy Maximov, Chairman of the Missionary Department of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa. His arrival in the country was dictated by the living need of local believers: people for whom Orthodoxy is not just a cultural memory, but a daily support, have long been waiting for the opportunity to gather for common prayer.
The liturgy became for them not only a spiritual event, but also a kind of meeting with their homeland. In the temple, even if it was temporary, the usual words of prayers were heard, sacraments were performed that united people of different destinies and histories. After the Liturgy, Father George served a prayer service for the water and a funeral litany. For many, this was a long-awaited moment: some were able to confess and take communion for the first time in a long time, others were able to receive holy water to take into their home as a sign of spiritual support. And on the eve of the service, another important event took place: one of her compatriots received the Sacrament of Baptism.
Not only believers, but also representatives of the diplomatic corps were present at the service. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Ghana Andrei Ordash called the celebrated Liturgy a “cornerstone” that could become the basis for a Russian Orthodox parish in the country. According to him, the emergence of a full-fledged community is especially important for compatriots living far from their homeland: it will help them maintain contact with traditions and feel like part of a big family.
Serbian Ambassador Milutin Stanojevic also supported this idea. He noted that the local community has a sincere request for spiritual life and constant pastoral care. And these words were not just formal: behind them there was a real picture — people who came to the service were in no hurry to leave after the end of the service, asked questions, talked about their needs, shared stories.
After the service, Father George himself assured that the spiritual care of the believers would continue. On the same day, he consecrated the Russian House in Accra — now it is not just an administrative building, but a place where prayer sounds and where you can come for support.
It is too early to talk about a full-fledged parish: there are many organizational and pastoral tasks ahead. But the main thing has already been done — a point of attraction has appeared. Believers were able to regularly gather for prayer, and clergy were able to see the real needs of the community and organize work taking into account local characteristics.
For the Russian Orthodox Church, this step is another confirmation that the mission knows no boundaries. And sometimes the most important thing begins with one Liturgy, which becomes the beginning of a long journey.
