And it was in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
Mark 1:9
It is this event, which is spoken of in the Gospels, dedicated to the church holiday. Christ’s earthly ministry begins with immersion in the waters of the Jordan. John the Forerunner baptized people there so that they would abandon the old, sinful life and begin a new, flawless one. When Jesus came to the place of baptism, John did not want to baptize him because he felt unworthy. Jesus insisted, because this was God’s will. During the ceremony, another significant event took place – the Epiphany. A dove, the Holy Spirit, descended upon Christ, and a voice from heaven proclaimed him his Son. Thus the Holy Trinity was revealed: by the voice (God the Father), the dove (Holy Spirit), and the God-man (Christ).
Baptism is a turning point in history. The long-awaited Messiah has come. The door to the Kingdom of Heaven is now open to people.
The feast of Baptism is solemn. Services are performed on Christmas Eve (the evening before) and on the day of Baptism itself, January 19. Before the holiday, believers hold a strict fast. The order of the Great Sanctification is the consecration of water. Water in Baptism is considered holy not only in the church, but also in all water bodies. Hence the tradition of Baptism bathing – believers believe that not only the body, but also the soul is purified in this way.
Confession, communion, drinking holy water for Baptism is desirable for everyone.
Orthodox man. But you need to plunge into the hole only voluntarily, if you have the desire and health allows.
Holy water is stored throughout the year, using with prayer, on an empty stomach, from ailments. It sprinkles housing, things. The water does not spoil, staying fresh all year.
The meaning of the holiday is not to plunge into the hole. For Orthodox believers, this is a reason to remember their own baptism. When Jesus entered the Jordan, he sanctified the water. We sanctify our lives by joining the Kingdom of Heaven. For believers, baptism is birth into eternal life. This is possible only through the sacrifice of Christ. It is a time to thank God for this wonderful gift.
