The date of birth of the boy, who was named Paul, is unknown. But we know the date of his death and that he lived for over a hundred years.
Pavlik was born in the family of a warrior, but his parents were very pious. They taught the boy literacy and introduced him to prayer, obedience, reading the Gospel. The whole family regularly visited the Trinity Monastery, where the abbot was his mother’s brother, Makari Kalyazinsky.
When the boy was orphaned, his uncle took him in. The monastic life came to Paul’s heart, and he persuaded his uncle to cut his hair at a very young age, at the age of 11. He was given a new name by Paisius.
The young man was engaged in rewriting the Holy Scriptures, wrote and decorated the lives of saints. One day, he heard a voice saying that Paisios would leave the monastery, live where he was commanded, and become a mentor to many. He shared what happened with his uncle.
Therefore, when the Uglich prince Andrew decided to establish a new monastery, Makariy entrusted this mission to Paisius. Paisius settled near Uglich, cut down his cell, and then began to build the temple of the Epiphany. Soon 10 monks joined him. Paisius was ordained priest and appointed abbot of the new monastery. In 1482, a new, large temple of the Intercession was consecrated in the monastery. Since then, the monastery has been called Pokrovsky.
Paisius was distinguished by a meek disposition, but when it was necessary he could defend his convictions. When the prince of Moscow Ivan Vasilyevich, drove his brother Andrew from the throne in Uglich and he died in prison, Paisy was not afraid to take his body and bury him in his monastery. All the years while Andrew’s children were in captivity, he kept correspondence with them, convincing and instructing.
Twice Paisius saved the city with his prayers. Once from the fire. He brought to the streets of the city the image of the Intercession of the Mother of God and the fire extinguished. Another time the saint stopped the flood by praying on the banks of the Volga, during a severe flood.
Paisios died in 1504, a deep old man. The whole city mourned his passing. The relics of the elder were buried immediately, in the Pokrovsky monastery.
