Saint Juvenal, Patriarch of Jerusalem

We don’t know anything about Juvenal until around 422, when he took the Holy See of Jerusalem. Then his activities became noticeable. Especially firmly he defended the dogmas of faith in the fight against heresy.
Juvenal was a member of the 3rd Ecumenical Council, which condemned the heresy of Nestorius, who denied the divine nature of Christ. At the 4th Ecumenical Council at Chalcedon, he fervently denounced the heresy of Eutychius, who claimed that the divine essence of Jesus absorbed his human hypostasis. The Council adopted the dogma of faith, which stated that these two entities of Christ are inseparable.
This position made Juvenal many enemies. The heretic Theodosius intoxicated the Dowager Empress Eudoxia with his speeches. With her support, Juvenal was overthrown.
The place of the patriarch was taken by Theodosius. The Holy Father retired to Constantinople, but after 20 months he was restored to the rank of patriarch. After the instruction of Simeon the columnist, the Empress came to her senses, returned to the dogmas of Orthodoxy and began to support Juvenal. He served the flock for a long time and died peacefully in 458, after serving as a teacher of Christians in Jerusalem for 38 years.
