Reverend Mark of Athens

According to legend, at the end of the IV century, an event occurred on the border of Egypt and Ethiopia.
What the eyewitness called a miracle.

A man who left philosophy for seclusion spent 95 years in a cave. During this time he did not meet any people or animals. The first three decades were a test of survival: lack of clothing, changing heat and cold, scant vegetation for food, sea water for drinking.

After 30 years, as reported in life, the condition of the ascetic has changed. His body was covered with hair that protected him from the weather. The angels began to deliver food.
The hermit himself claimed that he was shown the likeness of paradise, where he saw the prophets Elijah and Enoch.

A few years before his death, at the age of about 130, a monk named Serapion came to him. In the conversation, the owner of the cave asked the guest if modern Christians work miracles. As an example, he cited an evangelical phrase about a faith the size of a mustard seed capable of moving a mountain.

At the same time, the rock beneath them shifted almost three kilometers towards the sea. Seeing this, the hermit declared that he had not given such an order, and demanded that the mountain return to its former place. She complied.

Serapion fell to the ground in fear. He asked if he had seen such a thing in his life. The monk answered in the negative. Then, according to the source, the hermit wept and uttered a phrase about Christians who bear the name of the faith, but do not confirm it by deeds.

Before his death, the recluse asked him to bury himself in a cave and fill the entrance with stones. Two angels in the form of deserters later led Serapion to another elder, to whom he told the whole story.
