“Without God you can’t reach the threshold” — this old Russian proverb lived in the houses of our ancestors, sounded before starting any business and contained deep wisdom, hard-won over centuries. It contains neither a strict prohibition nor a dry commandment, but a simple, heartfelt understanding: not a single step will be truly firm unless you ask Heaven for support.
Remember the morning in an old village house. It’s just dawn, it’s cool and quiet in the hut, and the owner, before taking up his usual work, stops at the red corner, whispers a short prayer, and crosses himself. And this gesture is not a blind ritual at all, but trust: “Lord, be with me today, help me not to stumble, give me strength and reason.” Thus, it is as if a person takes with him an invisible support that will not let him down either in work, on the road, or in trouble.
God for a believer is like a loving Father. Is a child afraid to once again approach his father, talk about his anxiety, ask for advice? Likewise, the soul cannot bore God with its requests: in His heart there is enough room for every concern, for every quiet sigh. He does not expect perfect words from us — He expects sincerity.
This connection is easy to understand in simple images. Imagine a flower that reaches for the sun. It needs light and moisture — without them it will wilt, fade, and wither. Likewise, the human soul lives fully only when it is turned to God, to that very “Sun of Truth,” as He is called in spiritual texts. It’s worth moving away, withdrawing into yourself, relying only on your own strengths — and emptiness, fatigue, a feeling as if something important is missing appears inside.
That is why before every important step — be it leaving the threshold of the house, starting school, getting a job or solving a difficult problem — it is so natural to turn to the Lord. This is not about fear of the unknown, but about the ability to see that behind our affairs there is a higher power that protects and guides.
For those who are accustomed to pray, faith is not a subject of debate. They do not need to prove the existence of God: they feel His presence in the silence of the morning minutes, in unexpected support, in the peace that comes after a sincere request for help. They know: when God is nearby, even the most difficult path becomes feasible, and the most modest step becomes meaningful.
This is how this short but capacious phrase lives in people’s memory: “Without God, you can’t reach the threshold.” It contains a call not to forget about the main thing, to start any business with an internal appeal to Heaven and move forward, feeling that you are not alone.
