Where you can communicate with God

Communication with God in the Christian tradition primarily occurs throughprayer. And it doesn’t have to be any special place for it. You can pray:

  • at home — in your corner, in front of icons or just in silence;
  • on the road, at work, anywherewhere you can stop for a minute and turn to God mentally;
  • in nature — in field, in the forest, by the water: the silence and beauty of creation themselves set you up for an internal conversation with the Creator;
  • in a temple — this is a specially arranged place for general and personal prayer, where a person especially feels the presence of God thanks to worship, shrines and the congregational prayer of believers.

It is not so much the place that is important, but thecondition heart: sincerity, attention to words, willingness to hear and trust.

How the sign of the cross is performed and what it means

In the Orthodox tradition, the sign of the cross is not just a gesture, but aconfession of faith and a short prayer with the body.

How to be baptized correctly

  1. Fold the fingers of your right hand: join three fingers (thumb, index and middle) together — they symbolize the Holy Trinity: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
  2. Press the other two fingers(ring and little finger) tightly to the palm — this is a sign that the Lord Jesus Christ is both true God and true Man (two natures in one Person).
  3. Across yourself with the crossin this order:
    • to the forehead — to sanctify the mind and thoughts;
    • to the stomach (approximately at the level of the solar plexus) — to sanctify the heart, feelings and everything internal nature;
    • to the right shoulder;
    • to the left shoulder.
  4. End with a bow(usually from the waist) — as a sign of humility and worship of the Cross of Christ.
  5. At the same time, they mentally or quietly say:“In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.».

Movements should be slow and reverent, without fuss: in this gesture it is not formality that is important, but internal composure.

Symbolism and meaning

The sign of the cross combines several levels of meaning at once:

  • Confession of faith: folded fingers and the movement itself express the main truths of Christianity — the Trinity and the incarnation of Christ.
  • Memory of the Savior’s sacrifice: the cross is a sign of God’s love for people, a reminder that Christ died for every person.
  • A request for protection and help: for a believer, this is both a request for God’s protection and an expression of trust.
  • Sanctification of your entire life: touching the forehead, chest and shoulders, a person seems to devote his thoughts and feelings to God and deeds.

The words of St. John Chrysostom emphasize that the power of the cross is not in the substance, but in faith and the inner attitude of the one who depicts it: the cross becomes a “treasure” that cannot be taken away when it is kept in the heart.

When it is customary to be baptized

In tradition, the sign of the cross is performed:

  • before the start and after the end of prayer;
  • when entering and leaving the temple;
  • passing the temple or seeing a cross, an icon;
  • before eating and after eating;
  • at moments anxiety, fear, danger — as an appeal to God for help;
  • during worship — at those moments when this is accepted according to the charter (for example, when reading the Creed, during the exclamations of the priest, during bows).
