The life-giving Cross of the Lord – one of the greatest shrines of Orthodox Russia – found its abode in the Temple in the name of St. John Chrysostom in the village of Godenovo, near the city of Pereslavl-Zalessky. The temple is included in the courtyard of the Nikolsky monastery, and the sisters for many years lead the history of the Life-Creating Cross of the Lord, which appeared to the shepherds on the Sakhotsk swamp in 1423.

At first the shepherds saw the “unspeakable light on the Greek side.” Then, coming closer, they noticed that the Cross was hanging in the air with the Savior crucified on the tree of the cross and St. Nicholas coming to the Cross with the Holy Gospel in his hands. And they heard a voice that told them to build the Temple, the house of God.

Amazing and wonderful story of the Life-Creating Cross. He survived the fire when the old church burned down, he survived when after 1917 the God-fighters tried to saw it with saws and cut it with axes. And all these years — almost six centuries — the Life-giving Cross gave people the Miracle of healing from various ailments and forgiveness. Stories of miracles and healings from the Cross are recorded for many centuries in a special book stored in the Temple. To worship the Shrine and ask for its help, pilgrims travel to Godenovo today from all over the country.
