In May 1904, the hieromonk of the Vyshensk desert, who performed obedience, witnessed a miraculous healing from eye disease at the burial site of St. George. Theophanes the Recluse. Here’s his story.
“A peasant woman from the village of Saltykov Buty of the Spassky district came to Vyshu, with sore eyes, almost blind, and after lunch she wished to order a memorial service at the grave of His Grace Theophan. As a regular hieromonk, I did a custom funeral service.
Interested in this case, I asked the woman how she knew the name of His Grace Theophanes and why she had ordered a memorial service. The peasant replied that she had been suffering from a serious eye disease for a long time, had been treated by a doctor, but had not received help. She often prayed at night, asking the Lord for healing. During one of these night prayers, a monk appeared to her and told her to go to the Assumption Vyshenskaya Desert and pray for a memorial service at the grave of Bishop Theophan. The vision was repeated twice more and she arrived at the tower.
After several days of fervent prayers at the service, the peasant woman returned home, receiving healing.”
