I was painting the wall in the garage, and my 3-year-old daughter was painting with crayons on the concrete floor. She said, “I’m so glad God made you my mom.” I wasn’t ready for this and said, “What?” This time she got an even more clumsy phrase: «I’m glad you’re my mommy from God.»
My eyes filled with tears. Then my little girl began to pray, ‘Lord, thank you for giving me my beloved mother.’ Thank you (I didn’t understand that phrase). Thank you for always making me breakfast and for making pumpkin biscuits today. I hope we succeed.”
Then she opened her eyes and continued to paint. “Who taught you all this?” I began to ask, trying to overcome the lump in the throat. She was only three years old and I had no idea there was so much gratitude in her little heart. Normally our daughter never wanted to pray out loud, even when we encouraged her with sweets. Amazingly, her tiny heart can hold more love than I ever imagined, and her thoughts embrace things like God, love, and gratitude.
Thank you, Anna, I said, smiling. I am so glad that God sent me such a daughter. I would hug her if my hands weren’t in paint and there wouldn’t be that much distance between us. I thought it was the end of the conversation, but my daughter asked me another question.
“Did you have to wait a long time for me, Mommy?” she asked. I’ve told her this story a million times before, but she wanted to hear it again. I approached her a little closer: Yes, my dear. I asked God for the baby over and over again, but he didn’t give it to me for a long time. And then when my dad and I found out you were in my tummy, we were incredibly happy!
“Do you know why God didn’t give you a baby for so long?” she asked.
“No, honey, I don’t know,” I replied confusedly.
“I know why,” said the daughter. «Because he made me.»
I looked into her deep blue eyes, which now seemed simply unearthly; her curly blonde hair let the sun shine through. At that moment I thought it was a thousand years old.
“He made me,” that answer was enough. Of course! It made so much sense! Looking at her at that moment, I realized that this child had been sleeping on God’s chest for a very long time, as if heaven would not let her go.
I’m writing this for everyone who’s been praying for kids for a long time. I am writing this for those who have lost hope of ever having a baby. Please do not despair, do not be angry with God. He hears your prayers. He’s just creating your baby for now.
I honestly don’t know if you’re going to have children during childbirth or adoption. No one can understand how things work out in heaven, but maybe God hasn’t given you a baby for so long because he’s creating a real work of art. And one day, very soon, your baby will tell you, «God just did me a long time.» And that will be your happiness. Just wait for him.
