On the last day of spring 2026, May 31, the Russian Orthodox Church will celebrate the Day of the Holy Trinity. The date directly depends on Easter: the celebration occurs exactly seven weeks after the Resurrection of Christ, hence the second name — Pentecost.
According to the Gospel tradition, it was on the 50th day after the resurrection of Jesus that the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles. The disciples of Christ at that moment were in Jerusalem, in the so-called Zion Upper Room — a room that later became the first Christian temple.
Eyewitnesses described unusual natural phenomena: moving tongues of fire appeared in the air. They touched each of the apostles, but did not burn them. From that moment on, as the church explains, the disciples received the ability to heal the sick, prophesy and speak in dialects they did not know before. This gift allowed them to go to different lands preaching about the life and sacrifice of Christ.
The event in the Zion Upper Room is considered the moment of the birth of the New Testament church.
The priests pay attention: before Pentecost, the apostles feared arrest and execution, but after the descent of grace they gained determination and fearlessness.
The official theological teaching about the three hypostases of God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) was consolidated in 381 at the Second Ecumenical Council in Constantinople. In Russia, the tradition of widely celebrating Trinity appeared in the first half of the 14th century. This is associated with the name of Sergius of Radonezh, the founder of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.
On the holiday itself, believers do not fast. It is customary to decorate houses and churches with fresh greenery — branches of maple, rowan, oak or birch. The floors in churches are covered with grass.
These elements symbolize the renewal of the world and souls of people after the descent of the Holy Spirit.
The day before, on Mother’s Saturday, the departed are commemorated. On Trinity Day, the church advises to refrain from quarrels, domestic quarrels and hard work. As for folk signs: rain on this date foreshadows a warm summer and a good harvest, and in the old days people tried to avoid swimming in rivers because of beliefs about mermaids.
Services in churches on May 31, 2026 will be held according to the festive rites. An icon of the Holy Trinity will be brought out for veneration, most often modeled on a letter from Andrei Rublev.
