The Twelveth Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord Orthodox believers will meetAugust 19. In 2026, it is preceded by one day of celebration.August 18, and the holiday will last a week, until August 26 inclusive. In the national calendar, this date was fixed as “Apple Savior”, although initially the church statute prescribed the consecration of grapes.
The Gospel sources refer the event itself to the last months of Christ’s earthly journey. Three of his closest disciples, Peter, James and John, ascended the mountain with him. During prayer, the appearance of the Master was transformed: his face shone, his clothes became dazzling white. Moses and Elijah were talking to him about the coming Exodus. Then the cloud covered everyone and a voice came out, “This is my chosen Son, listen to him.” The apostles were told to keep silent about what they saw until the resurrection.
Theologians pay attention to the legal detail: according to the law of Moses, the testimony of two witnesses was considered sufficient confirmation. The presence of the lawgiver and the prophet symbolically assured that Jesus’ mission was consistent with the ancient scriptures. The disciples, on the other hand, were supported by this vision in the face of future suffering.
Historian Vasily Bolotov proved that the real event occurred not at the end of summer, but in February or March — shortly before Easter. August 19 appeared later and solved missionary tasks. In Armenia and Cappadocia, the holiday supplanted pagan celebrations in honor of the goddess Asthik. In the Greek and Italian lands, it was timed to the end of the grape harvest, replacing the bacchanalia with a thanksgiving prayer. In Constantinople, the holiday was established under Leo the Philosopher at the end of the IX century, and from there passed to the Slavs.
The Catholic Church did not make it universal until 1457. Pope Callixtus III attributed this to the victory over Turkish troops near Belgrade a year earlier. The liturgical rank of the holiday in the West remained lower than the eastern.
The statutory prayer speaks of the blessing of the «grape» — the vine. But in the northern latitudes, grapes were rare, so peasants carried apples to the temple. Thus arose the popular name, which has no direct connection with the evangelical content of the celebration.
