Transfer of the relics of St. Herman of Kazan

On October 8, the church honors the memory of Archbishop of Kazan, Herman.
Kazan had just surrendered to the troops of Ivan the Terrible. There was a great need for missionaries in the city and throughout the vast area. First Archbishop of Kazan.
Guriy founded a monastery in the small town of Svityazh. St. Herman was appointed abbot there.
By that time, he had already earned the reputation of a monk seeking the glory of God. Herman became a monk very young. The first years he spent in the Volokolamsk monastery, which at that time was led by Archbishop Guriy.
For 2 years he served as rector of the Staritsky Monastery, but then returned to the Volokolamsk monastery as a simple monk. Being an abbot meant too much attention to him.
However, the ministry in the new territories, St. Herman, took as his duty and unconditionally agreed to become the abbot of the new monastery.
In a short time, a stone cathedral, a bell tower and a brotherly building were built in the monastery.
The saint organized the monastery library and enthusiastically replenished it.
The Assumption Monastery became the center of educational and missionary work in the Volga region.
In 1566, Herman was ordained bishop. He energetically began to build temples, open shelters at the monasteries. Having learned about the activities of the Kazan bishop, Ivan the Terrible summoned him to Moscow and ordered him to take the rank of metropolitan. The saint refused, but the king was adamant. Waiting for the ordination ceremony, he was settled in the Kremlin, in the metropolitan chambers. There, he saw with his own eyes the troubles brought by the cause. Without fear, the saint expressed his opinion to the king. For this he was expelled from the Kremlin and remained under surveillance in Moscow until his death in 1567. That’s where he was buried.
But the monks of the Assumption Monastery and the inhabitants of Sviyazhsk, tearfully asked to transfer the relics of the saint to the monastery. This was done in 1592. In October, a solemn meeting was organized and the coffin with the body of the saint was placed in the cathedral.
Currently, part of the relics is stored in the Assumption Monastery, and part in the Monastery of John the Forerunner in Kazan.
