The Relics of the Righteous Virgin Juliana, Princess Olshanskaya

Kiev, seventeenth century. During excavation work at the Assumption Cathedral of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, an ancient burial was discovered. The tomb with the family coat of arms of the Olshanskys concealed the remains of the young princess Juliania, who had died a century earlier.

According to the inscription on the plaque, the daughter of Prince George Dubrovitsky-Olshansky died at the sixteenth year of life. At the opening of the coffin, those present saw the imperishable body of the girl in gold embroidered silk robes, with jewelry on her arms and neck. His head was crowned with a gold hoop with pearls. The fabrics, however, crumbled at the slightest touch. By order of Archimandrite Elisha Pletenetsky, the relics were re-exposed in new robes and transferred to the Assumption Church.

In 1617, an incident occurred that strengthened the veneration of the princess. A visitor named Vasily, who adhered to Arian views, under the guise of worshiping the shrine, removed a dear ring from his hand. As soon as the kidnapper crossed the threshold of the church, he collapsed dead. He was found missing while examining his body.

Later, the saint appeared in a vision to Archimandrite Peter Mohyla with a reproach for not paying enough attention to her tomb. The incident was the reason for the arrangement of a new cancer. It contained a text glorifying Julian as a heavenly intercessor and healer.

The abbot of the Golden-Domed Monastery Theodosia also appeared in the host of holy virgins, confirming her glorification by the Lord.

The fate of the relics was tragic: a fire in 1718 destroyed the remains in the Assumption Cathedral. The surviving fragments were placed in the Near Lavra Caves. Almost two centuries later, in 1889, at the request of Archbishop Modest of Volyn, a particle of the shrine was delivered to the Zhytomyr Cathedral.
