The Church honors the memory of Matrona of Moscow

Every year on May 2, Orthodox believers celebrate the day of the repose of one of the most famous saints of the last century — Matrona of Moscow. It was on this day in 1952 that the earthly life of a woman was cut short, to which people from all over the country were drawn during life.

A native of Tula province, born in a peasant family in 1881, was blind from birth. Physical illness did not become an obstacle: already in her childhood she became famous among countrymen as a person who could help where medicine was powerless. Word quickly spread beyond his native Sebino – to the house of her parents gathered people from distant counties.

A new blow of fate overtook her in her youth: at about seventeen years old she lost the ability to walk forever. She could no longer walk by herself, but continued to receive people.

After the revolution, life changed dramatically. The brothers joined the party, and it became dangerous to keep a man at home to whom Orthodox people flocked. Around 1925, she was in Moscow without housing, without a residence permit, in the care of random benefactors.
She was arrested several times, but each time she changed her address. So it lasted almost thirty years: Sokolniki, Arbat, Tsaritsyno, Skhodonia.

Moscow did not change the main thing — people came to her in an endless stream. She listened, prayed, gave advice, and never refused without asking for anything in return.
She insisted that what was happening was not her merit, but the result of prayer to God.

Shortly before her death, she informed her loved ones that she did not have long to live and ordered a burial. She was buried at the Danilov cemetery — she chose this place herself, citing the proximity of the existing church.

After more than forty years, in 1998, the remains were recovered from the burial and transported to the Pokrovsky monastery on Taganka. The commission, which included a forensic expert and an archaeologist, recorded a characteristic feature mentioned in early evidence: bone tissue in the chest area had a cruciform bulge.

In May 1999, Patriarch Alexy II signed the act of canonization. Matrona was counted among the local saints, the day of her memory was May 2. Cancer with relics is located in the Pokrovsky monastery and is open to visit daily.
