The baptism of the Lord (Epiphany)

The tradition of sinking into the water, symbolizing death for a past life and the ablution of sins, was born, thanks to John, the son of Elizabeth and Zechariah. That’s what they call him, «The Baptist.» He argued that just as water washes away dirt from the body, so repentance washes away sin from the soul. John knew that the Messiah was coming and that he had to be ready for his arrival.

Christ’s earthly ministry began with Baptism. Jesus knew that this symbolic act was necessary, that it emphasized His humanity. Despite the protests of John, who considered himself unworthy to baptize the Savior, Jesus insisted that “it is necessary to do what is required by the Lord.”

At the same time there was a second significant event, which gave another name to the holiday — Epiphany.

When Christ came out of the Jordan, the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit appeared to the world as a white dove. Many people, including Andrew the First-Called, heard a voice saying that Christ is the son of God and in Him is the favor of the Lord. For the first time, all 3 entities of God were demonstrated simultaneously.

For a long time, the feast of the Epiphany was part of the celebrations of the birth of Jesus, the worship of the Magi and the actual appearance of the essences of God. However, since the 4th century, it begins to stand out as an independent holiday. But the service, its rituals, the traditions of these celebrations are similar. The Liturgy of Basil the Great is celebrated, the Evening passes to the All-Night Vigil.

In remembrance of the great day, water consecration is performed in the church on Christmas Eve. Traditionally, it is believed that all water in the reservoirs becomes consecrated. Jordan is cut down on rivers and lakes – a special font in the form of a cross. It used to be used for consecrated water, but now it is done in the temple. Water consecration outside the temple is held on the Epiphany Day, not the day before.

Baptism is preceded by a strict fast, just like before Christmas, but only for one day. On this day in Russia it was customary to eat only one dish — Kutyu (sochivo). If Epiphany falls on weekends, fasting is slightly easier.

What matters

Immersion in the water for Baptism is a tradition, and not a church, but a folk tradition. It can be followed or not followed. But on the Day of Revelation it is important to show mercy. Jesus said he had no home. The apostle Paul called for hospitality for all, because this is how we greet angels. Try to feed the homeless, provide material assistance to the poor. From the faces of those whom you have helped, the eyes of Christ will look at you. And then the Epiphany will cease to be a holiday, but will become an everyday, warm and joyful reality of our lives.
