The Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God and the Virgin Mary

Little is known about the life of the Virgin after the resurrection of Jesus. She was with the apostles in Jerusalem, the book of Acts tells us. All other information is derived from the legends. According to them, the Virgin was warned in advance of her death. The apostles, who were in different cities and countries carrying the Good News, managed to return to the city to say goodbye to the Mother of Christ.

She blessed her friends and ordered her to be buried in the Garden of Gethsemane, next to her parents and St. Joseph.

Her death was peaceful, the Virgin just fell asleep. Such a death, easy, without suffering, is called the Assumption.

On the way to the Garden of Gethsemane, many miracles occurred. Funeral procession
The high priests tried to disperse her, but a thick cloud covered her, and the soldiers could not see anyone, although they could hear footsteps and prayers perfectly.

One of the high priests, Athonia, wanted to turn the bed on which the Virgin Mary lay. Both of his hands were cut off with a sword. But the main miracle, people knew only on the 3rd day. The Apostle Thomas stayed, arrived in the city only 2 days after the funeral and was very upset that he did not see the Mother of Christ before her death. At his request, the stone was rolled away from the coffin. What a surprise and delight those present felt when the tomb was empty!

As in the case of Jesus, only a shroud remained in the tomb – a mourning veil. It is the shroud, a special icon, taken to the temple on the eve of the holiday – August 27.

But the miracles didn’t end there either. On the same day, the Virgin appeared to the apostles. She said she would be happy to be with them all the time. And with this promise, believers go to the temple, asking for intercession and consolation from the Mother of Jesus.

The holiday is very symbolic. He shows us again that Jesus conquered death. We have only a brief nap before entering the Kingdom, where there is no pain, no evil, and no loneliness. Don’t be afraid of death, Jesus took out her sting. We should be afraid of sin, because it is the only way to unite with the Lord.

When she died, she did not leave this world. Day and night she intercedes before her Son for Orthodox people. Protects, protects, comforts, instructs.

No wonder in Russia the Assumption Cathedrals often became the main temples. In the Assumption we think of death, repent of our sins and rejoice that near us, invisibly but very palpably resides all those who grieve joy, the Ever-Virgin Mary.
