There are stories that you want to tell not as dry lines from a textbook, but as a living legend — so they have a lot of light, pain and a real miracle.History of Cyprian and JustinThere are two forces in it: magic and faith, and the one that rests on the silence of prayer and the firmness of the heart wins.
Cyprian was once a man known in Antioch as a powerful magi. From an early age, he learned what was considered the highest wisdom among pagans: divination, spells, rituals, which allegedly could subdue the elements and human feelings. He believed that power over the invisible world was the pinnacle of success. According to legend, he even made an alliance with the dark forces, and they served him as soldiers serve the commander. They came to him with requests: someone wanted to bewitch, someone wanted to take revenge, someone hoped to change fate with one word and gesture. And Cyprian used to think of himself as all-powerful.
Justine lived nearby. She was born into a pagan family, her father was a priest, and the world was filled with the usual rites and gods. But one day, everything changed. She heard a Christian sermon. Not loud, not designed for effect, but simple — about love, about repentance, about the fact that God sees everyone. That word echoed in her heart. Justina began to go to the temple, learned to pray, tried to live according to the commandments. She chose a path that seemed strange to many: to keep purity, not to pursue pleasure, to trust not predictions, but God. And in that quiet but firm choice was her strength.
One day a young man named Aglaid came to Cyprian. He was in love with Justin and wanted her to reciprocate him. But the girl refused: she had already made her choice and was not going to change it. Then Aglaid asked Cyprian to “help” with his charms. For the Magi, this seemed a familiar thing. He sent demonic obsessions, temptations, attempts to confuse her mind and feelings to Justin. But each time the girl defeated them in the simplest and most difficult way — prayer, fasting, the sign of the cross. She did not argue with temptations, she did not try to shout them over, but simply returned to the main thing: silence before God.
Then Cyprian decided to act differently. He sent sickness and calamity upon the city and upon Justina’s house, hoping that fear and pain would break her. But then the unexpected happened: the troubles could not shake her faith. And Cyprian, watching this, suddenly saw that his power was empty. What he saw as power for so many years proved powerless in the face of the quiet courage of a girl. It was not a defeat in battle, but the collapse of his entire picture of the world.
Cyprian came to the local bishop, confessed everything he did, and asked for baptism. He brought his own magic books and asked them to be burned as a sign that he no longer wanted to go that way. From that moment on, his life was very different. From one who once served the darkness, he became a man who taught others the light. Over time, Cyprian became a bishop, and his sermons were particularly powerful precisely because he knew the darkness from within and could tell how to get out of it.
But times were harsh. Under the emperor Diocletian, severe persecution of Christians began. Cyprian and Justina were captured, thrown into prison, tortured. They tried to break them with pain, humiliation, fear. But they held on. Even when they were thrown into a boiling pot, it seemed that faith itself had become their shield. They were eventually sentenced to execution with the sword.
On that day, a warrior named Theoctistus appeared next to them. He saw how calmly and firmly they were going to die. He saw that neither the threats nor the pain could make them recant. And then he openly declared himself a Christian, embraced Cyprian and accepted the same fate. So the feat of the two saints was joined by a third — a man who at the decisive moment could not stand aside.
In memory of Cyprian, Justina and Theoctistus the Church honorsOctober 15. On this day, they remember not only their suffering, but also what became their strength: loyalty, courage and the ability to resist neither fear nor temptation. These saints are often turned to for help in difficult moments: when it seems that invisible forces are pulling down, when a person is entangled in superstitions or afraid of what he cannot explain. But what remains of their story is a simple and powerful lesson: real power comes not from spells and power, but from the quiet but unflinching choice of the heart.
