The expression “like in Eugene” denotes a specific place — the Eugene Gate in
Constantinople. A place is like a place. It didn’t stand out as anything special until the residents of Constantinople noticed that amazing things were happening not far from the gate. Most often — healing. The blind regained their lost sight, the lame began to walk, and people who had already been given unction suddenly recovered.
Rumors of miracles reached Patriarch Thomas (607-610). He gave his blessing for the excavations.
Then the mass burial of the first Christian martyrs was discovered. During the era of persecution, their bodies were buried secretly to protect them from desecration. Thus, a common grave appeared near the Evgeniy Gate.
Of all the martyrs buried there, we know the names of two. This is one of the 70 apostles Andronikos and his wife Iunia. Mention of this couple can be found in the Epistle to the Romans.
The names of the spouses became known thanks to a vision that a cleric of a local church had. An angel appeared to him and said that among the bodies there were the relics of Andronicus and Iunia.
Theologians suggest that we are talking about the Church of the Archangel Michael. The name of the cleric is known for sure. His name was Nicholas Calligrapher.
During the reign of Emperor Andronicus, in 1185, a church was built at the site where the relics were found.
It was consecrated in honor of Saint Andronicus.
