The life of St. Cyril, later called Novoezersky, was full of miraculous phenomena. Already in the womb, he reacted to the church service. Since childhood, he preferred prayer and the study of divine texts to boyish joys. At the age of 15, he secretly left home, going to the Pskov-Pechersk monastery. He left what he was wearing, took no clothes or food. He didn’t know the way. On the way, the young man met the elder, who led him to the monastery, and then disappeared.
The abbot of the monastery tonsured the young man as a monk under the name Cyril. Despite his youth, Kirill gained deep respect from the brothers. His prayer flame, strict fasting, heavy obedience only strengthened the young man in the faith.
A few years later, Kirill, with the blessing of the abbot, went to wander through the Russian north, visiting the most remote monasteries. That’s how he spent 20 years.
While in the Tikhvin monastery in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin, during prayer, Kirill saw the Mother of God, who ordered him to go to the White Lake, promising to show the place for the future monastery.
So, the saint was on a small island on the White Lake, where he built cells for himself, for the future brethren and even cut down 2 small churches.
The fame of the saint spread quickly, soon the monastery already existed officially.
The small Sunday church has been expanded. We have built new rooms and premises.
Kirill spent the rest of his life in the monastery, which immediately began to be called by his name. He’s done a lot of healing. He is remembered for his humility and concern for people.
On February 4, 1532, he went to the Lord.
The tomb was covered with a cover, 8 images and a local candle were placed next to it. A little later there was a mug for donations, which often collected significant amounts.
In the inventory of 1632, the saint’s belongings are noted: Psalter, staff and robes («dashhi and drana»).
In 1649, in connection with the construction of a new, stone Resurrection temple, the tomb was opened. The relics were transferred to a specially made cancer. Upon completion of construction (1652), the cancer was transferred to the Ascension temple.
In 1614 in the Inscriptions there are references to the icon with the image of the Cyril. The monks went to the villages with her. By 1640, 10 icons of the monk were already kept in the monastery and 40 were made and sent to other local churches. In the Vologda Museum of Local Lore one of them is kept.
In 1626, the biography of Cyril was compiled. Since 1659 it has been included in all editions of the Printed Prologue.
In 1919, the cancer with the relics of the saint was opened, the act of finding two coins in the skull of the 18th century was made. After that, the fate of the remains is unknown.
Kirillov Novoezersky monastery was closed, the buildings are still used as a prison.
