Reverend Jacob Bryleevsky

From Discipleship to Your Own Desert: The Earthly Path of St. James Bryleevsky

A nobleman by birth, the Monk Jacob of Bryleevsky entered church history as the founder of the Vvedenskaya desert on Kostroma land. His spiritual formation took place within the walls of the Predechensky Zheleznoborovsky Monastery under the leadership of St. Jacob Zheleznoborovsky, whose memory the Church celebrates on April 24.

In the monastery of the teacher, the future ascetic carried the obedience of the worker. This multi-valued church concept combined two ministries: on the one hand, heavy physical labor for the benefit of the brethren, on the other hand, the probationary status of a person preparing for monastic tonsure. This experience allowed a native of the Bryleev family to fully adopt monastic traditions from the famous teacher.

After a while, the decision to arrange a separate monastery was ripe. The place for her was chosen not far away — only five versts from the Zheleznoborovsky monastery, if you move towards the city of Bui. The new desert was dedicated to the feast of the Entrance of the Most Holy Mother of God into the temple, which gave her a name and determined the inner rhythm of the liturgical life.

The earthly path of St. James ended in the fifteenth century. The place of his repose was the Vvedenskaya church of the monastery founded by him. Over time, the veneration of the saint was fixed in the calendar: in addition to local glorification, the memory of the ascetic is celebrated on the day of the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles, combining the image of the deserter with the celebration of Pentecost.

So the nobleman, who voluntarily abandoned worldly advantages for the sake of monastic feat, left a memory of himself not only as a disciple of St. James Zheleznoborovsky, but also as an independent organizer of the monastic community, whose name is prayerfully resounding centuries later.
