In the 3rd century, when Christians were persecuted, Markell was bishop of Rome. My husband was honest, open and full of courage. Once, when he met the emperor, he dared to reproach him for persecuting those who prayed for him. The emperor became enraged, ordered Markell to be captured and devised a humiliating punishment for him: he ordered him to go after pigs. By then, Markell was already in his venerable years. Hard physical work was too much for him. He soon became ill and died. This happened around the year 305.
